«Несчастный случай» – результат встречи двух студентов МГУ Алексея Кортнева и Вальдиса Пельша. Позже к дуэту присоединились саксофонист Павел Мордюков и Сергей Чекрыжов, который стал клавишником и основным композитором группы. Датой основания рок-группы считается 1983 год.
